Mar. 8th, 2014 10:32 pm"The hell you mean Curly Joe took you to poker?" Bonnie demands, while serving lunch up to Ernest. Sometimes twice a week doesn't seem enough time to keep an eye on him, but she's long since had to discover that he'll make his own mistakes whether she likes it or not, as will all her boys.
"I can go to poker if I want." Ernest protests.
"I didn't say you cain't, I said you should know people will cheat you." Bonnie says, sitting down opposite him. "Now how much did you lose?"
"Twenty dollars. And... and I borrowed forty off Curly Joe, and he says now I owe him eighty or he's gonna break my legs."
"Oh he does, does he?" Bonnie scowls. "You got his phone number?"
Ernest produces it from a book. Bonnie leaves her lunch momentarily to get to the phone.
"Is that Curly Joe?" she asks, when the phone is answered. "I'm Bonnie Murdock, I'm Ernest's guardian... Oh yes you do know what this is about - first off, he cain't sign for nothin' over thirty dollars without me, and second, you don't go chargin' him a hundred percent interest. You will get your forty dollars back and you will say thank you and you will leave his legs be... or what? I'll tell you what, I will call up two hundred bikers and we will park outside your house... yes you will get your forty dollars back tomorrow and you will say thank you. Good afternoon." she comes back to her lunch.
"You ain't gonna do that again, huh?" she asks Ernest, tucking into her roast.
"No ma'am." Ernest says.
"Good boy. Did you have fun at poker at least?"
"Not really." Ernest admits. "I kept losin'. When we fixed the boat up, can we go fishing?"
"Sure thing, that's why I bought it." Bonnie says. "It ain't ready yet, we got to get it floating."
They work on the boat all afternoon. To the untrained eye, it's just a wooden boat with a rotten bottom, but building something good from something broken is what she likes to do best.
