May. 12th, 2015 09:41 pm"Mrs Murdock, can you just sit down?" the manager at the orphanage asks, for the third time. "If the child was taken into care six months ago, five minutes won't make a difference."
"Sorry." Bonnie sits next to Lucy, who gives her a comrade smile. So far, apart from once answering 'yes' when the woman hadn't said anything (which they managed to cover over quite smoothly, Bonnie felt) Lucy has made a good showing to the manager.
"Did you try looking under Terence Evans? Terry might be short." Bonnie asks, after a moment. The woman glowers at her, and she meekly silences.
"I don't remember a Terry Evans coming through here, but he could have gone to one of the other homes." she says, leafing through her files. "You say he's a relative but you don't know how old he is or what he looks like?"
"Well if he's John's son, that makes him my great nephew." Bonnie says. "I just want to know if he's in a safe place."
"So you said." The manager instructs a secretary to telephone around, and after about twenty long minutes the secretary comes back.
"We've found a Terry Evans." she says. "Who's eight, so I think it's the right one. I've written down the address."
Bonnie looks at the address.
"Thanks." she says. "This is quite out the way, were you full?"
"No, that's where the Evans brothers are housed." the secretary says. "I guess they'd be Terry's uncles? Came out of juvie a few months back, but they can't be housed here any more."
"How come?" Lucy asks.
"They burgled the manager's house..." the secretary shakes her head. "Anyway, I spoke to the guy who runs this house, they have a strict Saturdays only visiting rule, to stop the kids missing school."
Bonnie thanks her. The two uncles recently in juvie fits in with the story John told her, and she leaves with a fair bit of hope.
"Well at least we're not going on another hunt." Lucy says, as they head back towards the bikes.
"Yeah." Bonnie agrees. "I have so many papers to mark, I'm kinda glad that we can safely wait until the weekend. Maybe we can introduce him to some of my other great nephews and nieces some time?"
"Well we'll have to be careful, they said there was a permanent placement lined up in the summer." Lucy says. "If we screw that up, they'll be pissed. You said once the kids get much older than eight they're real hard to place."
"I'm not goin' to try nothing like that." Bonnie says. "I don't normally take under tens anyhow. I mean, if he had nowhere to go it'd be different."
Lucy nods in agreement, thinking of Bonnie's other great nieces and nephews, and hoping she doesn't get too attached.
