Field Trip: part 1
Apr. 2nd, 2015 10:28 pmBonnie had been worried at first that Lucy might not be up to the trip. But aside from her being a little more withdrawn, and not really wanting to leave the house most days, Lucy seems to be in good spirits about the idea of going to France to find Bill.
At the airport, early in the morning on the first week of Spring Break, it's Grover who has the last minute jitters. Which doesn't surprise Bonnie, since most warnings she has to pep talk Grover by telephone just to get him out of the house. He wipes sweat off his balding forehead and looks worriedly at the aeroplane.
"What if it crashes?" he frets, staring at its propellers.
"Well, I figure it'd be a quick way to go." Bonnie says casually. "But likely it won't."
Lucy, who towers over both Bonnie and Grover, lugs their bags over to the plane for loading. Transatlantic flight is incredibly expensive, so this is a once in a lifetime trip they assume, and they'll be roughing it for the rest of the trip. And possibly the rest of the year.
None of them have ever been in a plane before, but after an hour or two of geeking out about the engineering of it all, Bonnie and Lucy take a nap while Grover spends the rest of the trip walking up and down to have a nervous smoke.
They land in France in what is, local time, early evening. This'll be the only night they spend in a hotel, unless things go well, and despite Grover's translating that the ladies are his two aunties, the bed and breakfast owner insists that they sleep in separate rooms, which doesn't help their budget.
First thing the next morning, they purchase an extremely run down but just running car, and spend the whole day tuning it up, adjusting the paintwork, and cleaning the interior. They drive it to the first campsite, before selling it for a bargain but very much more than they paid.
"We keep doin' that, we'll be in a hotel again by the end of this trip." Lucy jokes, as they erect the tent they hired.
"I don't think we'll get that lucky every day." Bonnie says. "I half thought we'd be sleepin' in that car."
She stops as Lucy looks around, staring intently at the trees, as she's been doing a lot over the last few weeks. Bonnie frowns slightly. Surely Lucy doesn't think they'd still be followed all the way out here? Whoever was targeting her before could hardly have known that they were going on a plane, let alone got here. She puts a gentle hand on her sister-in-law's shoulder.
"Y'ain't still worryin' about bein' followed here, are you?" she asks. "We're the other side of the world."
"I'm sorry, I thought I heard something." Lucy shakes her head.
"It could be someone else." Grover says, worriedly. "We are tourists after all, it could be muggers."
"We're in the middle of nowhere, we ain't gonna get mugged." Bonnie says firmly. "And if we did, they wouldn' know what'd hit 'em."
They light a fire to cook dinner, and spend the evening watching the stars, with wine. After a mugger-free sleep in the tent, they're soon heading out to do the same again.
