"Okay, here's the deal." Bonnie says, sitting beside the two Evans brothers. It's not the best place to meet, just an old bench behind the group home the kids live in.
"Your social worker says you two are a few leather jackets away from bein' the next biggest organised crime syndicate and that the two of you should be separated fer the good of each other and the United States in general."
She glances over to see whether this elicits a smile from either of the boys. Poker faces, hard to tell. She continues.
"Anyhow, I managed to persuade them to give you one more chance."
"All right!" Stuart punches the air. Ted gives a pleased smile.
"Hold yer horses, there are conditions." Bonnie says. "So listen up. They agreed that I can take over yer care at the end of the school year, only if you two make a commitment to a life away from crime. That means if you rob anyone else, or break the law in any way, or start a new protection racket at yer new school, one or both of you may be taken off me."
This sobers them up. Bonnie continues further.
"And if I cover up fer either of you, I lose you both. They acknowledged that any kid might get caught up in something by mistake, so bein' honest will work in yer favour."
"We're ready to quit crime." Ted says.
"Just don't express the particulars at our middle school." Stuart says. "We have a cornucopia of students under our protection, and if their bullies hear we're out of business, they'll get beaten up."
"Deal." Bonnie grins. "You've only got a couple weeks anyhow, then you got the summer, and then you start Rydell with me."
"Hey, Aunt Bonnie?" Stuart asks. "Would you come to our graduation?"
"Stuart's probably going to be valedictorian." Ted says.
"You are? Well that's fantastic." Bonnie grins. "Sure I'll come. How about you, Ted?"
Ted looks away and shrugs.
"Do you want a little help preparing?" Bonnie asks gently.
"I'm not dumb." Ted says. "I just missed a lot of school at juvie. We both did, but Stuart, he's not smarter than me even if he does talk like a dictionary, but he worked his ass off and... I just felt it was hopeless so I didn't."
"Well you got another few years in school yet to catch up." Bonnie says. "What's yer GPA?"
"1.7." Ted sighs. "I don't let Stuart do assignments for me though, even though we're in the same class."
"Well I'm not a teacher fer the academic subjects, but I bet we can find a few ways to get those grades up a little at least." Bonnie says. "If you want. No rule sayin' I cain't come visit you here sometimes before you come live with me."
